Labor has ramped up pressure on the NSW Government to build the Yallah Interchange as part of the Albion Park Rail Bypass, with Shadow Roads Minister Jodi McKay joining local MP Anna Watson to launch a petition on the issue.

NSW Roads and Maritime Services announced two proposed routes for the northern end of the proposed Albion Park Rail Bypass near Dapto, however it is believed the Government’s preferred option does not include the construction of the Yallah interchange. This decision will force Dapto residents to use the existing highway through Albion Park Rail before being able to access the Bypass.

The NSW Government claims this decision is based on current traffic modeling. Labor is calling on the Government to release all information relating to the construction of the bypass, to ensure transparency and facilitate proper community debate.

The Government’s decision comes as the population of Dapto and surrounding suburbs rapidly expands, with construction of approximately 20,000 new dwellings to house 55,000 new residents over the next 20 years.

Petitions will be distributed to local households over the coming weeks. If the petition receives 10,000 signatures, the issue will be debated in the NSW Parliament.

Copies of the petition can be downloaded here or by contacting Anna Watson’s office.

Quotes Attributable to Anna Watson MP:

“I encourage local residents to sign this petition and send a clear message to Gareth Ward and the Liberals: build the Yallah Interchange and don’t leave Dapto residents behind.

“Over the next 20 years, there will be tens of thousands of new residents in Dapto. This is just another short-sighted decision from a Government that doesn’t understand our region.

“My community has been waiting decades for this project and they’re not willing to wait any longer. The message I have heard is clear – hard working Dapto residents deserve access to the Bypass.”

Quotes Attributable to Jodi McKay MP:

“This project is too important to be at the political whim of Gareth Ward. I call on the Minister to be upfront with the local community and tell local residents why the Government wants to ditch the Yallah Interchange.

“This is a Government that continues to make decisions for the Illawarra without any consultation with the community. Dapto is one of the fastest growing areas in the region, and Labor will be fighting to ensure the community gets the infrastructure it deserves.”
