GOVERNMENT SPLURGES ON STADIUMS WHILE SCHOOLS, HOSPITALS AND ROADS WAIT FOR EXTRA FUNDING

MEDIA RELEASE

Shellharbour MP Anna Watson has today condemned the NSW Liberal Government for robbing the local community of vital infrastructure upgrades while splurging $2.5 billion on knocking down and rebuilding two stadiums in Sydney.

The out of touch Berejiklian Government’s stadium strategy will rob the region of money that could and should be spent on  delivering vital upgrades to Shellharbour Hospital, building the Albion Park Rail Bypass Yallah Interchange and fixing the maintenance backlog in our local schools.

The school maintenance backlog in the Shellharbour electorate currently sits at over $8.2 million and could be fixed using less than 0.35% of these funds. Similarly, Shellharbour Hospital’s inadequate redevelopment budget of $251 million could be extended and the project could be completed for a fraction of this price.

The Government plans on spending $2.5 billion on knocking down and rebuilding Allianz Stadium at Moore Park and ANZ Stadium and Sydney Olympic Park, and building a new stadium at Parramatta. ANZ stadium is only 17 years old, and was built for Sydney’s 2000 Olympic Games.

Quotes attributable to Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson MP:

“This Premier has her priorities all wrong. I’m calling on the Government to deliver the Yallah Interchange, fully-fund the Shellharbour Hospital redevelopment and fix the maintenance backlog in our local schools before they go around splurging billions of dollars on sports facilities.

“At a time where our community is still waiting for the Government to deliver on their promise to fully upgrade Shellharbour Hospital and a secret plan to refuse to build the Yallah interchange has now been revealed, this decision is a slap in the face for the people of Shellharbour.

“There are no stadiums being built in the Member for Kiama’s electorate. Here is Gareth Ward’s opportunity to come out and show some leadership. He should condemn this enormous waste of taxpayers’ dollars and work with Labor on delivering these vital projects in our local area.”
