This Sunday, 12 November 2017, the Shellharbour community will come together to celebrate the news that their hospital will remain in public hands.
Hosted by Keep NSW in a Healthy State, the celebration will take place at Warilla-Barrack Point Surf Life Saving Club (7 Osborne Pde, Warilla NSW) between 12:30pm – 3:30pm on Sunday, 12 November 2017. Everyone is welcome, and food and games will be provided at the event.
This event comes in the wake of a recent announcement by the NSW Government that Shellharbour Hospital will remain a publicly owned and operated facility, and its $251 million redevelopment will be entirely publicly funded.
In September 2016, the NSW Government announced plans to privatise Shellharbour Hospital, under the guise of a public-private partnership.
The year that followed was one of uncertainty and intense opposition, marked by rallies, debates and public forums with the help of the local community. Patients, staff, unions, Illawarra Labor MPs, local councillors and the general public united to voice their opposition and call for Shellharbour Hospital to remain in public hands.
For anyone looking to get involved or seeking further information, a Facebook event has been created for the celebration.
Quotes Attributable to Anna Watson MP:
“After a campaign that spanned 13 months, this victory was ultimately a win for people power. It was because of the support and tireless efforts of our entire community that Shellharbour Hospital will remain in public hands and it’s only fitting we celebrate this news together.
“This back-flip was the final nail in the coffin for this Government’s privatisation agenda for our state’s public hospitals – and that’s definitely cause for celebration.”
