WATSON CALLS ON MINISTER TO FIX THE SCHOOL MAINTENANCE BACKLOG NOW

MEDIA RELEASE

Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson, is calling on the new Education Minister, Rob Stokes, to fix the school maintenance backlog in NSW as a matter of priority.

Documents obtained by the Labor Opposition have revealed that the value of outstanding maintenance within NSW schools totaled a staggering $775 million, with the Government allocating a dismal $65 million towards addressing this backlog – only 8 percent of the total amount.

“There are currently 18 schools within the Shellharbour electorate with outstanding maintenance requests, including Oak Flats High School which has a worrying backlog of $1,777,498, yet has only been allocated $96,434 by the Government for maintenance works. That is only 5% of the total amount required. Based on this current funding allocation it is estimated that it will take approximately 18 years to clear the maintenance backlog at Oak Flats High School, which is totally unacceptable” said Ms Watson.

“The data shows that a further 5 schools within the Shellharbour electorate have a maintenance backlog exceeding $500,000. It is concerning to think that our local schools will miss out on much needed repairs due to this funding shortfall”.

“The magnitude of this maintenance backlog is evidence of an appalling failure by the State Government to deliver high quality classrooms and education facilities in NSW. Our children deserve the best possible education, and that means providing the best possible learning environment, yet the NSW Government seems content to allow our local schools to fall into a state of disrepair”.
