Dapto TAFE loses another 6 staff as Wollongong Liberal Councillor says he’s “glad”

MEDIA RELEASE

Dapto TAFE campus has lost another 6 staff in the last year following plummeting student enrolments first revealed a fortnight ago by Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson.

The latest bad news for the future of Dapto TAFE comes as Liberal Wollongong City Council, Bede Crasnich, told the Dapto Neighbourhood Forum, which covers the Dapto TAFE campus, in an email that he was “glad west (sic) Wollongong has been allocated new resources…”

“I just find it extraordinary that a Liberal Councillor covering the expanding population of Dapto and West Dapto would be crowing in an email that he was glad to see the decline in student enrolments and staff at a tertiary education facility in his local area.

“I would have expected Councillor Crasnich’s first obligation would have been towards the constituents he represents in his own backyard”, Ms Watson said.

Ms Watson said that the Liberal State Government was silently gutting the Dapto TAFE campus.

“When Labor left office in 2011, there were nearly 700 students enrolled at Dapto TAFE.

“Today, there are only 274 enrolled there and staff numbers over the last four years have fallen from 111 to just 83.

“89 staff were employed at the Dapto TAFE last year.

“This year, staff numbers have declined by another 6 according to the Minister for Education.

“We won’t ever know the enrolment and staffing numbers in 2015 because the State Government will keep those numbers a secret”, Ms Watson said.
