NSW Liberals power sale: Illawarra gets nothing but higher electricity prices

MEDIA RELEASE

The State Government’s 20 year Infrastructure Strategy for the Illawarra is a pathetic failure and shows what a con job the power sell-off is for the region, Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson, said today.

“The NSW Liberals are trying to con the Illawarra community into supporting higher electricity prices but we get no new roads, community infrastructure, or health infrastructure.

“There is nothing in this so-called new infrastructure strategy for the Albion Park Rail Bypass, new on/off ramps for Dapto and West Dapto along the M1 Motorway, or for Shellharbour Hospital’s upgrade in my electorate.

“The NSW Liberals have been running around trying to con the people of the Illawarra.

“Today, the NSW Liberals have delivered absolutely nothing for the Illawarra region from this strategy.

“We only have the usual ‘more plans for plans’ and preparation of business cases by the end of 2015.

“The NSW Liberals are expecting the people of the Illawarra to vote to sell-off power for the benefit of metropolitan Sydney residents.

“They’ll cop all the cash from the sale, and we get slapped with higher electricity prices.

“It’s no wonder the National Party wouldn’t have a bar of this power sell off, opting to keep poles and wires in country areas in public hands, but the Illawarra Liberals, like Gareth Ward, fell for his Premier’s con job hook, line and sinker.

“If the Liberals’ own partner in government – the Nationals – can’t trust Premier Mike Baird, why should the rest of us?”, Ms Watson said.

She said that IPART figures confirm that Illawarra electricity prices have increased by 35 per cent since the Liberals were elected in March 2011.
