Watson requests urgent briefing on mental health services at Shellharbour Hospital

MEDIA RELEASE

The Minister for Health has been asked to provide an urgent briefing on the state of mental health services at Shellharbour Hospital, Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson, said today.

“I have formally written to the Minister, Jillian Skinner, today requesting an urgent briefing be provided to me and any of my Parliamentary colleagues in the southern region by the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District into the adequacy of mental health services, patient and staff safety provided from Shellharbour Hospital’s Eloura West unit.

“It has been revealed by local media investigations today that at least three former psychiatric patients of Shellharbour Hospital have died and an alleged murder took place at the facility on 31 July 2014.

“The Health Services Union (HSU) has also revealed that staff are in fear of their safety and that highneed beds have been reduced at the facility.

“I have made representations to the Minister since I was first elected, including one on behalf of a constituent last week, regarding concerns about the facility’s operation.

“There are obviously a range of stakeholders who are raising serious concerns about the operation of the facility and these concerns must be addressed”, Ms Watson said.
