Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson said the State Government’s attempt to increase the GST by 50% would have a devastating impact on household budgets in the Illawarra.
“The GST is a regressive tax which hits low and middle income households the hardest.
“Increasing this tax by 50% as proposed by the Premier Mike Baird will require massive compensation in the billions of dollars, which ends up making this so-called tax reform meaningless.
“I am very surprised that the Liberal Party – which is supposed to be philosophically opposed to tax increases – is proposing a dramatic increase in the GST from the current 10% to 15%.
“I am also amazed that the Member for Kiama Gareth Ward can so seamlessly change his position on taxes in the space of 24 hours.
“Yesterday he was quoted on ABC Illawarra indicating he was opposed to the introduction of a property tax which was supported by the Illawarra Forum.
“This morning he was on ABC Illawarra indicting that he supported Mike Baird’s 50% increase in the GST.
“Mr Ward knows no shame and thinks the public have the attention span of a gold-fish.
“The State Liberal Government is already the highest taxing and highest spending government ever in New South Wales.
“Now both Premier Baird and his Illawarra lap-dog Gareth Ward want to get their hands deeper into your pockets and purses with a 50% increase in the GST”, Ms Watson said.
