The Premier’s continued secrecy on his recent meeting with BlueScope Steel is unacceptable and shows contempt for the Illawarra, Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson said today.
“Day after day we are getting more word of the secret meeting with this company by the State Government and yet the Premier still refuses to disclose what was discussed at his meeting with BlueScope Steel representatives.
“Today’s disclosure by the Member for Kiama that BlueScope Steel has requested State Government assistance but the Premier won’t explain what that request was simply shows complete distrust and contempt for the Illawarra region”, she said.
Today’s Illawarra Mercury has revealed:
- “The premier met with BlueScope executives in July but a spokesman from his office has declined to detail what was discussed.”
- “All meetings between the premier and third parties are confidential,” the spokesman said.”
- “But Kiama MP and parliamentary secretary Gareth Ward has confirmed the Port Kembla steelmaker has asked for government assistance.”
- “Mr Ward would not provide any details of the proposal as it was “essentially commercial-in-confidence”.
Ms Watson wrote to the Premier last Friday following her Private Members’ Statement in the State Parliament on Thursday, 6 August calling on Mr Baird to make a ministerial statement on the future of the steel industry in the State.
“The on-going secrecy about the Premier’s meeting with BlueScope Steel must end now.
“The Illawarra is suffering from a crisis in confidence and the Premier and BlueScope Steel would rather that continue than level with the community.
“It’s simply unacceptable and shows complete contempt for us all”, Ms Watson said.
