BEWARE WARD’S WEASEL WORDS ON COUNCIL MERGERS

MEDIA RELEASE

Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson today warned the Illawarra’s Mayors to beware of Gareth Ward’s use of weasel words as he indicates opposition to the State Government’s forced amalgamation of Illawarra Councils.

“Gareth Ward has led them all up the garden path for months.

“He now appears to only be suggesting that he is opposed to the forced amalgamation of Kiama Council with Shoalhaven Council.

Mr Ward has told the Illawarra Mercury today he has informed the Premier:

“I advised him that I have always been of the view that Kiama can and should stand alone.”

Mr Ward however told the Illawarra Mercury on 4 September 2012:

“…I would oppose the amalgamation of Kiama, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven and Wingecarribee absolutely.”

Ms Watson said that Mr Ward must make clear publicly that he is opposed to his Government’s plan to force the amalgamations of Wollongong Council with Shellharbour Council, and Kiama Council with Shoalhaven Council.

“The Mayor’s and Councillors of Illawarra Councils simply cannot afford to let Mr Ward use weasel words because his past assurances to them all have proven absolutely worthless.

“Mr Ward cannot be permitted to get away with only focusing his personal opposition to his own Government’s plans for Kiama Council’s amalgamation, which appears to be why he’s using typically weasel words”, she said.
