BLUESCOPE MUST COME CLEAN ON STEELMAKING FUTURE

MEDIA RELEASE

Bluescope Steel must make its intentions on the future of steel making in the Illawarra clear after speculation reached fever-pitch today that it may close its Port Kembla plant, Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson, said this morning.

“This is a bombshell for the Illawarra and it is crucial that Bluescope management comes clean as a matter of urgency on precisely what its intentions are on the future of steel making in the region.

“I have many Bluescope Steel employees living in my electorate, and I am extremely concerned by this speculation.

“My electorate is most likely ground zero in terms of the number of workers employed at Bluescope Steel in the region.

“The company owes it to its workforce and the regional community to outline its future plans immediately.

“Having the region in suspended animation while Bluescope Steel management operates in a cone of silence simply won’t cut it.

“This speculation about the future of its operations has already knocked the stuffing out of the region just hours after word of this bombshell started getting out”, Ms Watson said.
