The Minister for Health should commit to starting the $250 million upgrade of Shellharbour Hospital in the 2016 Budget as she visits the Illawarra today, Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson said.
“I’m pleased to see the Minister making a rare visit to the Illawarra today to officially open the Wollongong Hospital elective surgery unit upgrades.
“It’s good to see that the Minister is opening an Illawarra health infrastructure project initially funded and started by the former Labor Government in the 2010-11 State Budget.
“As part of the Minister’s visit today she should be able to confirm that the Health Ministry has finally completed the business case for the $250 million upgrade of Shellharbour Hospital and submitted it to the Treasury.
“The Minister should also be able to confirm the details of the business case and outline a clear timetable for the start of construction of the Shellharbour Hospital upgrade.
“The State Government says that its election commitment has been fully funded.
“There is no reason, if this is the case, for the Minister not to be able to get the Shellharbour Hospital upgrade started in next year’s State Budget”, she said.
Ms Watson said that the ‘planning’ of the Shellharbour Hospital upgrade had now been underway since 2011.
Illawarra Labor MP’s called for the start of the Shellharbour Hospital upgrade by 1 July 2016 in Labor’s 10 Point Plan to Support Illawarra Jobs released on 4 September 2015.
