Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson has slammed the State Government for taking its time to respond to the steel crisis in the Illawarra seizing on business investment uncertainty.
“The State Government needs to provide a clear response to the steel crisis.
“Why are we still waiting for the Premier to indicate whether his Government will provide the payroll tax concessions requested by BlueScope Steel executives four months ago?
“This crisis has not just snuck up on the State Government.
“Everyone knows what BlueScope Steel has requested.
“Steel workers and the combined steel unions delivered on their position last Thursday.
“Why is there a continued delay by the State Government in putting its cards on the table?
“Everything that the State Government said was required has been delivered.
“Steel workers have spoken very clearly and have delivered $60 million in cost-savings to the company.
“Over 500 jobs will be lost.
“And yet we’re still waiting for the State Government to come to the table with a clear package, which was promised at a stakeholder round-table in Wollongong over a month ago.
“The Premier needs to get off the Twitter and Facebook accounts talking about popular culture and start telling the Illawarra what his Government is doing to play its part in saving the steel industry”, Ms Watson said.
