LIBERALS’ SHELLHARBOUR HOSPITAL ANNOUNCEMENT A CON-JOB 8 DAYS BEFORE POLLING DAY

MEDIA RELEASE

The Liberals’ sudden announcement of an upgrade for Shellharbour Hospital is an election con-job just eight days before polling day, Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson, said this afternoon.

“If this money can suddenly be discovered for the Shellharbour Hospital upgrade eight days from polling day, why wasn’t it found over the last four years?

“This sudden announcement by the Liberals’ has no credibility and will not fool the people of my electorate.

“This promise by the Liberals is unbelievable and hastily cobbled together because of Labor’s announcement on March 13 to set aside $30 million to upgrade Shellharbour Hospital profoundly embarrassed the Liberals and Nationals.

“This eleventh-hour announcement must mean that polling in Gareth Ward’s electorate is dismally poor, especially as he strongly supports the sell-off of our electricity network.

Ms Watson announced last Friday that Labor would invest $30 million to kick-start the Stage 1 upgrade of Shellharbour Hospital.

Labor’s upgrade would include:

– A new and expanded emergency department with up to 25 spaces;

– A new 8 bed emergency medical unit; and

– A new day surgery unit with up to 15 spaces.

“Labor built the Shellharbour Hospital and has invested in new services throughout its time in government.

“Labor has also this morning announced the establishment of a new West Dapto Health Centre, selected from 19 sites across NSW.

“Health Care Co-location facilities are a ‘one-stop shop’ for community health services such as nursing, oral health, mental health, physiotherapy and podiatry”, Ms Watson said.

The West Dapto Health Centre would be funded from Labor’s $100 million Health Care Co-location program.
