Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson has hit out at a response she received from the Minister for Industry, Resources and Energy on steel procurement labelling it weasel words as the State Government continues to delay announcing its response to the steel crisis in the Illawarra.

“We’re just being played in this region by Liberal Governments at the State and Federal level.

“Ministers and officials are using meaningless, weasel words and calling for more meetings and talkfests to avoid making very clear announcements on precisely what government will actually do to help make the steel industry sustainable in the Illawarra.

“The policy making process to address the steel crisis has been nauseatingly slow, full of hollow commitments, and we have not seen the end of it.

“On Monday Illawarra stakeholders are being dragged to yet another pointless talkfest in Sydney to tell Federal and State Ministers what they were already told at an earlier stakeholder meeting in Wollongong on the 7 September.

“It is time to end this farce and it’s time the Premier announced his Government’s plan of action to help save the steel industry today.

“State Parliament is in session: he should walk into the Legislative Assembly and make an immediate ministerial statement on the future of the steel industry in the Illawarra, and explain how his Government will play its part.

“The Premier is testing the continued good-will and patience of the Illawarra region.

“The foot-dragging, weasel words and hollow sentiments must end”, Ms Watson said.
