The full year results to the Australian Stock Exchange by BlueScope Steel released this morning places the onus on the Premier to deliver a ministerial statement to State Parliament this week explaining how the State Government will help sustain steel production in the Illawarra, Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson, said today.

“The silence from the Premier on the future of steel production in this region must now stop.

“BlueScope Steel has called on the State Government to provide it with assistance.

“The Premier must now outline precisely what the company has requested and whether or not his Government stands ready to deliver the assistance requested by the company.

“I repeat my call for the Premier to deliver a ministerial statement to the State Parliament this week”, she said.

Ms Watson said that BlueScope Steel’s intention to cut up to 500 jobs from the steel works would worsen consumer confidence and threaten other jobs in manufacturing in the region.

“The State Government cannot stay silent or refuse to act on a job cut of this magnitude in a region already suffering a crisis of confidence.

“We’re not just now talking about just 500 jobs from BlueScope Steel.

“Many other manufacturing and other business in the Illawarra will feel the impact of these further job losses”, she said.

Ms Watson said she would introduce a Notice of Motion in the State Parliament this week calling on the State Government to start the construction of the Albion Park Rail Bypass and upgrade of Shellharbour Hospital as a matter of urgency.

“My Notice of Motion will call for the upgrade of Shellharbour Hospital to start in next year’s budget and for the Albion Park Bypass to start in the 2017-18 budget year.

“These two projects alone are worth $800 million to the southern Illawarra”, she said.
