PREMIER’S ‘NO SPEAKIES’ MUST END AFTER RELEASE OF STEEL IMPACT REPORT

MEDIA RELEASE

Following the release of a University of Wollongong report indicating catastrophic impacts on the Illawarra jobs and regional economy, the Premier must stop playing ‘no speakies’ and deliver a ministerial statement to State Parliament on the future of the steel industry without further delay, Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson said today.

“The report released today has shaken the Illawarra to its core, but the Premier remains silent.

“The Premier must show some leadership and political will and address the challenges facing the steel industry in the Illawarra head on.

“The Premier owes it to the Illawarra community to level with us on what discussions have been held with BlueScope Steel and what it’s requested in assistance.

“Refusing the face up to this significant challenge is only showing the region contempt it doesn’t deserve.

“We deserve far better treatment from the State Government and BlueScope Steel executives”, she said.

Ms Watson has been calling on the Premier to make a ministerial statement on the future of the steel industry in the State Parliament and also wrote to Mr Baird on Friday.
