The $250 million upgrade of Shellharbour Hospital could be years away according to the State Government after it conceded that no funding has been allocated towards the project and no firm construction timetable has been set, Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson said today.

“The Liberals made the announcement of the $250 million upgrade with much fanfare less than a week before polling day at the March election.

“The State Government now concedes that it has not presented a final Business Case for the $250 million upgrade to Treasury, it has not allocated any funding towards the project and no construction timetable exists for starting it.

“This is despite the State Government’s claims during the election that the $250 million Shellharbour Hospital upgrade is fully funded from within the existing health budget.

“Clearly the State Government’s election pledge to upgrade the Shellharbour Hospital is years away from being met”, she said.

Ms Watson has called on the State Government to start the $250 million upgrade by 1 July 2016 – in next year’s State Budget.

“I’ll keep fighting to ensure that pressure is placed on the Minister to allocate funding for the upgrade of Shellharbour Hospital in next year’s Budget.

“If the funding is available, as the State Government claimed when it made this announcement, I see no reason why the people of the southern Illawarra need to wait years before the project starts”, she said.
