Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson has accused the State Liberal Government of imposing sneaky cuts to the Dapto Respite Centre – where it is now closed one week in every four – despite a pledge by the Minister for Disability Services and Minister for the Illawarra, John Ajaka MLC, that the Centre would remain fully operational.
“I am absolutely disgusted that the State Liberal Government appears to be imposing cuts to services at the Dapto Respite Centre.
“This is an appalling way to treat disability clients who currently use the Dapto Respite Centre.
“I was given an iron-clad commitment by the Minister for the Illawarra and I expect that commitment to be honoured in full by the State Government.
“I want the Minister to appear in public before Saturday and make it absolutely publicly clear that the Dapto Respite Centre will remain open every single day of the week, and that any parent with a family member with disabilities is able to register and receive services.
“Any attempt to close the Dapto Respite Centre, or change its operational hours, for any period of time, is an absolute betrayal of the iron-clad commitment provided previously by the Minister.
“Families using the Dapto Respite Centre should not be lied to, or misled, by the Minister under the cover of an election campaign.
“This issue must be sorted out as a matter of urgency right now so people using the Dapto Respite Centre can have very confidence in their continued use of the Centre and the services provided from it”, Ms Watson said.
