The State Government has adopted another initiative proposed by Illawarra Labor MPs to provide fee-waived training places for BlueScope Steel workers who will lose their jobs following the restructure of the company, Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson said today.
“I welcome the State Government adopting yet another initiative Illawarra Labor proposed on the4 September as part of our 10 Point Plan to Support Illawarra Jobs.
“Providing expanded training places in our local educational institutions is crucial in supporting retrenched steel workers into new job opportunities”, she said.
Labor’s 10 Point Plan to Support Illawarra Jobs called on the State Government to provide for:
- Immediate expansion of training and further education places at all Illawarra TAFE campuses and the University of Wollongong, including scholarships and waiving of fees for workers affected by BlueScope Steel and related company restructures.
The State Government adopted Point 1 of Labor’s 10 Point Plan to Support Illawarra Jobs by announcing payroll tax concessions to BlueScope Steel a fortnight ago.
“I encourage the State Government to go further and adopt all of the initiatives proposed by Illawarra Labor MPs to support regional jobs in the face of the steel crisis”, Ms Watson said.
