STATE GOVERNMENT HAS RELOCATED ONLY 38 PUBLIC SECTOR JOBS TO ILLAWARRA IN LAST FIVE YEARS

MEDIA RELEASE

The State Government has confirmed that it has relocated only 38 public sector jobs to the Illawarra over the last five years, Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson said this afternoon.

In an answer to a question on notice to the Minister for Regional Development, John Barilaro MP; the Minister has indicated that “the NSW Government so far has relocated 235 public sector jobs from metropolitan Sydney to regional NSW, including 38 positions to the Illawarra…”

The State Government policy of relocating 1,500 public sector jobs from the Sydney CBD to metropolitan and regional areas over a decade.

“At a time when the Illawarra is facing job losses and business closures including the threat by BlueScope Steel to close steel production, confirmation that the State Government has relocated just 38 public sector jobs over the last five years to the region is a dismal effort.

“The last State Labor Government relocated 900 jobs to the Illawarra in two tranches.

“600 jobs were relocated to the region when Pillar Superannuation was placed at Coniston.

“A further 300 jobs were created in Nowra when we relocated the Department of Local Government.

“This Government has managed to relocate only 38 public sector jobs to the Illawarra over the last 5 years.

“This is a pathetic effort and I believe the people of the Illawarra will be quite shocked by the State Government’s own admission”, Ms Watson said.
