The Minister for Skills John Barilaro MP has admitted for the first time during Estimates Committee hearings today that the State Government is planning to sell off the Dapto TAFE campus, among others in New South Wales, Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson, said this afternoon.
After being questioned in budget estimate hearings about the risk of regional TAFE closures in Dapto, Moss Vale and Belmont, Mr Barilaro stated that the Baird Government was “open to a process of asset recycling and rationalisation” – allowing the government to sell these sites.
“The State Government has deliberately gutted Dapto TAFE campus over the last five years.
“They have made Dapto TAFE campus a ghost town.
“Now we have for the first time an indication of the State Government’s real agenda: to sell-off the Dapto TAFE campus.
“I remain absolutely determined to ensure that the State Government’s real estate plans for the Dapto TAFE campus are never realised.
“This is an important educational institution for the growing Dapto and West Dapto areas.
“I will be seeking a meeting with the Minister as soon as possible to discuss the State Government’s sell-off plans, and make clear that the local community at Dapto and West Dapto will not stand for the campus site being sold off to developers for housing.
“This campus site was built for education purposes and I am determined to ensure it remains for that very purpose”, Ms Watson said.
