The State Government now has no further excuse to delay provision of the payroll tax concessions requested by BlueScope Steel following the meeting of steelworkers today, which has voted to make substantial contributions to the $200 million cost saving target, Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson said this morning.
“The State Government has been hiding behind every fig leaf for the last three months so it can delay making a final decision on the payroll tax concession issue.
“Steel workers have made crucial sacrifices today in order to secure the viability of the steel works.
“It is now time for the State Government to put its cards on the table.
“Will it commit to providing the payroll tax concessions BlueScope Steel requested of the Premier three months ago?
“We certainly don’t need yet another talkfest to get an answer.
“I call on the Premier to give the Illawarra a clear commitment that his Government will deliver on the payroll tax concessions and that changes will be made to NSW procurement policy to purchase maximum possible Australian-made steel use in infrastructure projects”, Ms Watson said.
