Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson has today slammed an announcement by Member for Kiama Gareth Ward about his support for ‘resurrecting’ the Home of Football at West Dapto as another hollow promise by the Liberals after the party – in government at State and Federal level – quashed funding for the project – twice.
“Gareth Ward and the Liberals must think football supporters in the Illawarra region are stupid.
“His Government and his Federal Government partners killed off funding for this proposal at West Dapto – not once, but twice, in less than 12 months.
“He didn’t support it when money was available from the sell-off of the Port of Port Kembla, and he didn’t lift a finger to convince the Abbott Government to keep the funding allocated by my Parliamentary colleagues, Stephen Jones MP and Sharon Bird MP, after the federal election.
“Now he wants to portray himself as a champion of football in the Illawarra.
“Mr Ward has made yet another hollow promise to football fans in the Illawarra and he should be called out on a pure deception.
“He has pledged nothing in his grand announcement today except to suggest he’d support another funding application from Football South Coast – maybe he could start another of his infamous petitions.
“This is a roll-gold, con-job by Gareth Ward on the ever of an election before his Liberal Government goes into caretaker mode.
“If his new-found commitment to football really exists, he would be standing on the fields of West Dapto putting money on the table.
“But he and the Liberals have a track record of talking up a big game and then missing the goal when it comes to supporting this proposal for a Home of Football in the southern Illawarra region”, Ms Watson said.
