Ward waving magic wand of embarrassment

MEDIA RELEASE

Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson has today hit back at Kiama MP Gareth Ward’s claims that she has been misleading on the State Government’s Bureau of Health Information (BHI) statistics relating to Shellharbour Hospital.

“Gareth Ward is just trying to wave his magic wand of embarrassment and shows he’s out of touch.

“Mr Ward doesn’t like facing up to bad news.

“Mr Ward simply doesn’t understand that if you’re a mother with a sick little child, you’re not one bit interested in historical statistics from 1902.

“You’re only interest is getting in to see a doctor so your child can start to feel better quicker.

“But the facts are that waiting times at Shellharbour Hospital’s emergency department are longer – patients are now waiting an hour longer than the State average.

“Elective surgery lists have increased, with patients waiting 80 days longer for non-urgent surgery at Shellharbour Hospital than when the Liberals were first elected.

“These aren’t my statistics – they are from the Government’s own BHI.

“Mr Ward has been unable to dispute the accuracy of a single statistic I have used from the BHI.

“But Mr Ward can argue about statistics going back through the ages all he likes.

“It’s these student political games that Mr Ward relishes which has led to his own Liberal Parliamentary colleague, Federal Gilmore MP, Ann Sudmalis, labelling him “irresponsible and incorrect”.

“I’ll stand with the mother wanting to get her sick child seen to by a doctor as quickly as possible at Shellharbour Hospital.

“We need an upgrade to Shellharbour Hospital and that’s what I’m fighting for.

“Incidentally, if Mr Ward wants a whopper so badly – they’re much better at Hungry Jacks”, Ms Watson said.
