Fairfax Media management has been called on to drop its Illawarra media restructure and to develop a new proposal which saves jobs, Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson, said ahead of a public rally in Wollongong tomorrow afternoon.
Ms Watson said that she had written to Fairfax Media management on the 19 May 2015.
“While I appreciate that the business model for newspapers is under constant pressure across the world, the proposed restructure Fairfax Media has in mind will simply gut journalistic and editorial capacity in the region.
“I call on Fairfax Media to re-consider this latest restructure and explore, in collaboration with staff across publications in the region, whether a new proposal can be implemented, which saves the jobs of journalists and photographers, while maintaining news coverage”, she said.
Ms Watson said that the quality of production and the credibility of publications like the Illawarra Mercury, Wollongong Advertiser, Lake Times and Kiama Independent will be seriously eroded if the restructure as currently planned proceeds.
