Penalty rates are an important part of weekly and fortnightly income for workers in the Shellharbour electorate, Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson said today, and have her full support.
Ms Watson made her declaration of support for penalty rates following a call for all candidates at the State election in the Illawarra to publicly indicate their position by the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Union (SDA).
“Retail and manufacturing workers, and many other employees in the health and community sector, rely on penalty rates as part of their personal and family income in my electorate.
“I will always strongly oppose any attempt by employer organisations and Liberal Governments – at state and federal level – to attack workers’ penalty rates.
“I have never understood why peak employer organisations and conservative politicians would seek to attack the income of workers.
“Who do they think spends cash in their shops and purchases their services?
“Their opposition to penalty rates and the minimum wage are based on pursuing an old ideological agenda.
“Peak employer organisations should start to realise that attacking and undermining the personal and family income of workers only leads to massive uncertainty and stalls confidence in the economy.
“My position of full support for the continuation of penalty rates for workers is clear.
“I’m not so sure my Liberal opponent in Shellharbour can make the same clear, decisive statement”, Ms Watson said.
