The Premier should have “listened” three months ago when his Government sought to ban greyhound racing in New South Wales.
The Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra and South Coast, Gareth Ward should have done the same.
While the humiliating backflip announced today by the Government is welcome, it should have listened to the greyhound racing industry and the good men and women who participate in greyhound racing – like those at the Dapto Dogs.
The shutdown of the greyhound racing as announced and legislated by the Government was entirely premature.
The Government now says it is listening to the community because it got “it wrong”.
The Government has got a heap of other issues “wrong” in the Illawarra.
Today’s humiliating backflip by the Government on greyhound racing should be followed by a backflip on:
The privatisation of Shellharbour Hospital
The forced amalgamation of Shellharbour and Wollongong City Councils
The refusal to establish a Service NSW Centre in the Shellharbour electorate
The refusal to start construction of the Albion Park Rail Bypass
The refusal to construct a permanent noise barrier at Flinders, and
The refusal to support the mandating of Australian-made steel in publicly funded infrastructure projects.
The Government must heed the clear message from our local community on all of these issues.
It’s time the arrogance of the Baird Government ended.
The Premier and Mr Ward should start listening to the Illawarra and stop getting it “wrong”.
