The Dapto TAFE campus will close its doors on 22 January and could be replaced by a shop-front facility in the Dapto CBD to run short-term classes, Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson said today.

“The State Government has deliberately gutted the Dapto TAFE campus of students, teachers and services for the last five years.

“Last year, in a secret Cabinet paper, it listed the campus as part of a secret sell-off of TAFE assets across New South Wales.

“I have been told today by a TAFE insider that a decision has been made to close the doors of the Dapto TAFE campus on Friday, 22 January 2016.

“TAFE Illawarra has been given a $100,000 budget to lease office facilities and intends to open a new ‘shop-front’ on the Princes Highway at Dapto.

“This ‘shop front’ will act as a ‘gateway’ for students and some short-term classes may be run from the new location.

“This is yet another example of the State Government wasting money on leasing new commercial facilities while it has an empty campus standing at the ready to do its job just metres away.

“The State Government simply has warped priorities.

“It’s gutted a perfectly good campus, which just five years ago was a bustling place of learning with nearly 700 students and 111 teaching staff”, she said.
