I will be attending the official sod turning for the beginning of construction of the Fowlers Road to Fairwater Drive West Dapto extension this afternoon.
This is a very significant infrastructure project for the Dapto and West Dapto areas.
It will finally unlock the $22.5 million from the NSW Restart Illawarra Infrastructure Fund, which has been sitting in a Treasury bank account in Sydney for the last two years.
I called for this funding to be unlocked on the 5 April ahead of the 2016-17 State Budget during a visit to West Dapto by my Labor Parliamentary colleagues, Deputy Labor Leader and Shadow Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, Michael Daley MP and the Shadow Minister for Transport and Roads, Jodi McKay MP.
The West Dapto area will develop into a ‘mini-city’ in its own right over the next two decades.
The former State and Federal Labor Governments recognised the population expansion in the West Dapto area between 2010 and 2013 by providing Wollongong City Council with $41 million to upgrade West Dapto’s road network.
During the 2015 state election NSW Labor pledged further funding of $46 million to build new, additional exit ramps at Kanahooka and Fowlers Road, and a new interchange at Emerson Road to provide better access of motorists to and from the M1 Motorway.
NSW Labor pledged a further $44 million to build a new high school at West Dapto and $7.8 million towards a permanent Home of Football at West Dapto.
In addition, we pledged the construction of a West Dapto Health Care Centre, which was adopted by the State Government but has yet to be delivered.
West Dapto residents will welcome the start of the Fowlers Road to Fairwater Drive extension.
More however needs to be done to provide this growth area with more infrastructure.
I continue to lobby the State Government to:
- Construct additional exit ramps along the M1 Motorway;
- Deliver the West Dapto Health Care Centre;
- Upgrade the Dapto Station commuter carpark;
- Deliver a permanent Home of Football, and;
- Plan for and fund the new primary and high schools identified for West Dapto in its Illawarra Growth Plan.
