GARETH WARD VOTES AGAINST MOTION TO DEBATE FORCED COUNCIL AMALGAMATIONS IN STATE PARLIAMENT

MEDIA RELEASE

The Member for Kiama Gareth Ward just a few minutes ago in the Legislative Assembly voted against a motion moved by Labor to accord priority to a debate on his State Government’s proposal to force the amalgamation, Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson, said this afternoon.

“Gareth Ward has shown yet again that he says one thing in Macquarie Street and another in Terralong Street.

“Today he had a chance to put his money where his big mouth is and to use the floor of the State Parliament to stand up for the Illawarra, and particularly the Kiama local government area.

“He had a chance to walk the talk.

“Instead, he decided to plonk his backside down on the backbench and sit with his Government to deny a priority debate on his Government’s forced amalgamation proposal.

“Mr Ward will never stand up to his Government on a hard issue which threatens his personal political career.

“Climbing the greasy political pole is more important to Gareth Ward than standing up for his community on the floor of the State Parliament.

“Words are cheap when it comes to Gareth Ward.

“He’ll say one thing to get a clap but he won’t put up his hand to back it up in the State Parliament.

“The bottom line is that Mr Ward has decided to betray the communities in Kiama, Shellharbour, Wollongong and the Shoalhaven”, she said.

Ms Watson said that all Illawarra State Labor MP’s voted to support the motion to accord priority to debate forced council amalgamations in the Legislative Assembly this afternoon.
