Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson has today written to Kiama MP Gareth Ward offering a briefing on the importance of the Steel Industry Protection Bill 2016 to the future security and sustainability of the steel industry in the Illawarra.
Ms Watson says in her letter, Mr Ward’s comments reported in today’s Illawarra Mercury indicating that he will vote against the Bill when it is introduced into the Legislative Assembly “are disappointing to the hundreds of steel workers and steel industry contractors” who depend on the industry living in her electorate.
She also tells Mr Ward in her letter:
“Perhaps if you actually represented an electorate in which the manufacturing sector is so crucial to the lives of workers, their families and local community, you might revisit your current ideological position.”
Ms Watson’s letter offers Mr Ward a briefing on the provisions in the Steel Industry Protection Bill prior to its introduction into the Legislative Assembly and a vote.
The Steel Industry Protection Bill is currently under debate in the Legislative Council where it has attracted the support of all minor parties and a vote on the Bill is expected in early August when State Parliament resumes.
