JOINT MEDIA RELEASE
Shadow Treasurer Ryan Park has launched a community maxi-card in the Shellharbour electorate today highlighting the State Government’s refusal to start investing $800 million in the southern Illawarra for two major infrastructure projects.
At the state election one year ago the State Government promised the $250 million upgrade of the Shellharbour Hospital and construction of the $550 million Albion Park Rail Bypass.
Since then, despite consistent pressure from the Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson, there has been no start to the upgrade of Shellharbour Hospital and no start to the construction of the Albion Park Rail Bypass.
In fact, both the Premier Mike Baird MP and Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra and South Coast Gareth Ward MP have voted against allocating funding for both infrastructure projects on the floor of the State Parliament.
Illawarra State Labor MPs called on the State Government to start the upgrade of Shellharbour Hospital by 1 July 2016 and start construction of the Albion Park Rail Bypass by 1 July 2017 in NSW Labor’s 10 Point Plan to Support Illawarra Jobs last September.
The State Government refuses to place a start date on the upgrade of Shellharbour Hospital or the construction of the Albion Park Rail Bypass.
Quotes attributable to Ryan Park:
“The Illawarra deserves to see significant investment flowing. We know all too well the economic challenges our region is facing. There is no excuse for these funds to not be flowing.
“Getting these projects up and running needs to be given priority.
“It’s simply not good enough for the Government to expect that this local community can wait another three years before it upgrades Shellharbour Hospital and starts the Albion Park Rail Bypass five minutes before the next election in 2019.
“As Shadow Treasurer and Shadow Minister for the Illawarra, I’m calling on the Premier to get this investment flowing in this year’s budget and next year’s budget.”
Quotes attributable to Anna Watson:
“While patients continue to queue for treatment at Shellharbour Hospital and motorists suffer more congestion on the Princes Highway at Albion Park Rail, the Government just wants to shuffle paper and waste time for the next three years.
“The Premier is so confused that he actually told State Parliament in March that these two projects “are underway and happening.”
“Cows don’t build roads and sprinkling fairy dust doesn’t build hospitals.
“My community wants a start to the upgrade of their hospital and a start to construction of the Albion Park Rail Bypass.
“We not interested in playing politics – we want the jobs and the investment.”
