LABOR’S 90% STEEL USE BILL PASSES THE UPPER HOUSE

JOINT MEDIA RELEASE

Illawarra Labor MPs, Ryan Park, Anna Watson and Labor’s candidate for Wollongong, Paul Scully have welcomed the united support of all the minor parties in the State Parliament’s Legislative Council for Labor amendments to the Steel Industry Protection Bill 2016.

The Bill was voted on this morning and has passed the Legislative Council, despite the opposition of the Liberal Party.

The Steel Industry Protection Bill 2016 includes key elements of NSW Labor’s Secure and Sustainable Steel Jobs package announced on 30 May, including:

  • 90 per cent use of Australian-made steel in all publicly funded infrastructure projects across New South Wales;
  • Appointment of a Steel Industry Advocate to ensure new Australian standards and certification for Australian-made steel use is monitored and complied with, and;
  • Location of the Steel Industry Advocate in the Illawarra region.

The Bill will now be debated in the Legislative Assembly.

Illawarra Labor MPs are calling on the Government to list the Bill for debate and a vote as soon as possible.

Quotes attributable to Shadow Treasurer, Ryan Park MP:

“This is something we can all be very proud of in the Illawarra.”

Quotes attributable to Paul Scully:

“This Bill and Labor’s amendments sends a clear message: we support the steel and manufacturing industries based in the Illawarra and the thousands of jobs relying on it.

“A key priority of my campaign for this by-election is based on jobs, jobs and jobs.

“NSW Labor cares about the security and future of the steel industry in the Illawarra.”
