Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson has today slammed the State Government for not appearing before the Senate steel inquiry public hearings in Wollongong.
“The decision by the State Government to chicken out of formally appearing before the Senate steel inquiry while it is holding public hearings in the Illawarra today is a disgrace.
“The steel industry has a home in this state and it is disgraceful that the State Government cannot bother to appear before a public inquiry to put its view on the challenges facing the industry, its workers and this local regional community.
“The State Government hasn’t even bothered to make a formal submission to the Senate steel inquiry.
“The Premier seems to believe that the payroll tax concession the Government provided to BlueScope Steel is the end of the issue.
“But there are other important issues facing the sustainability of the steel industry in NSW, including the future of procurement policy.
“The State Government should have fronted the Senate inquiry’s public hearing today.
“Instead it has chickened out of an opportunity to address the future sustainability of one of the most important manufacturing industry sectors in the Illawarra and the rest of the state”, Ms Watson said.
