The former Liberal Mayor of Shellharbour City Council, Councillor Kellie Marsh – an ally of Member of Kiama, Gareth Ward MP – seconded a resolution carried unanimously at Council’s October meeting calling for a report to be prepared to “…limit operations on the current Shellharbour Hospital site to publicly operated hospitals only.”
The revelation of Councillor Marsh’s move is contained in the Minutes of the Ordinary Meeting of Shellharbour City Council held on 11 October 2016.
It follows an earlier Council resolution also passed unanimously which called on the Minister for Health, The Hon Jillian Skinner MP “to not continue with the tender process for public private operation of Shellharbour Public Hospital and instead to continue with the $251 million upgrade as promised.”
Councillor Marsh has also publicly opposed the forced merger of Shellharbour City Council with Wollongong City Council.
Comments attributable to Anna Watson MP:
“The revelation that the former Liberal Mayor of Shellharbour City Council has seconded a motion calling for a report to be prepared to limit the operation of the existing Shellharbour Hospital site to publicly operated hospitals only is a major embarrassment for Gareth Ward.
“Mr Ward’s strong support for the Government’s privatisation of the Shellharbour Hospital now puts him at odds with the most senior elected Liberal Councillor in the southern Illawarra.
“It follows yesterday’s strong show of community opposition to the Government’s plans at a community rally.
“It appears Councillor Marsh also does not believe the political spin of her ally, Mr Ward, about the future of Shellharbour Hospital operated by the private sector.”
