WARD MUST APOLOGISE FOR TWEET SLUR ON ILLAWARRA NURSES

MEDIA RELEASE

Gareth Ward must publicly apologise for slurring Illawarra nurses and midwives on Twitter yesterday claiming they don’t care about hospitals.

Mr Ward and Greens Party MLC, Jeremy Buckingham, exchanged Tweets yesterday in which Mr Ward claimed the union that nurses and midwives belong to – the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association – “doesn’t care” about hospitals and services.

Mr Ward’s Twitter slur comes just days before the community holds a public rally against the Government’s plans to privatise Shellharbour Hospital on Sunday, 6 November 2016.

Comments attributable to Anna Watson MP:

“Gareth Ward has slurred our caring and dedicated nurses in a Tweet and he should apologise immediately.

“His comments that Illawarra nurses and midwives, who are members of the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association, don’t care about hospitals and health services is an outrageous slur.

“Nurses and midwives are the most dedicated professionals in our hospital system.

“They don’t deserve slurs from Gareth Ward.

“I’d just ask the people of the Illawarra, who they trust when it comes to their health care: our dedicated nurses and midwives or a Liberal politician?

“Mr Ward should withdraw and apologise to our region’s nurses and midwives for his slur on their commitment to ensure our local community retains quality, affordable hospital and health care.”
