The Baird Liberal Government must listen to the community of the southern Illawarra and abandon its proposed privatisation of Shellharbour Hospital.
The call comes after Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson made another impassioned speech against the privatisation on the floor of State Parliament last night, and follows a letter signed by doctors published in the Illawarra Mercury this morning.
27 doctors have signed an open letter, which raises serious concerns about the privatisation of Shellharbour Hospital by the Government.
The doctors’ letter says:
- Health care delivery will be further complicated;
- Public hospitals must be used to train medical students and specialty training;
- Fostering research;
- Government’s budget position should not be used as an excuse to outsource health care;
- Community does not accept the Government’s decision.
The letter signed by the 27 doctors follows similar public concerns being raised by nurses and midwives and a strong community rally held on November 5 attended by over 1500 people.
Comments attributable to Anna Watson MP:
“The letter signed by 27 doctors is a hammer-blow for the Government’s privatisation plans for Shellharbour Hospital.
“The Government must listen to the very clear messages sent to it by the local community, nurses & midwives and now our doctors: keep Shellharbour Hospital public!
“The Government should deliver on the promise it made at the 2015 state election and invest $251 million in a publicly owned and operated Shellharbour Hospital.
“When the nurses & midwives and now the doctors have said the Government’s privatisation plan is bad for patients and for healthcare, the Government should be listening to this very clear message.
“The community knows who to trust with their healthcare and it’s not Liberal Party politicians.”
