LOCATIONS SHORTLISTED AS PLANNING CONTINUES FOR DAPTO

Fowlers and Kanahooka Roads have been shortlisted as locations for south-facing entry and exit ramps onto the M1 Princes Motorway at Dapto in south Wollongong, as planning continues on the project.

For the past six months, the Albanese and the Minns Labor governments have been working to determine the best location for the ramps in response to feedback from the community.

The assessment process to choose the most suitable location considered safety, traffic and transport outcomes, cost, environment and sustainability impacts, community needs and long-term benefits.

Emerson Road was also considered during the investigations but was found to have a larger impact on safety, biodiversity and residents, as well as issues with flooding, detour routes and limited space.

Project planning will now continue, and the community will soon see team members at Fowlers and Kanahooka Roads carrying out survey work.

In response to community feedback, the Yallah Interchange, originally proposed as part of the Albion Park Rail bypass, was considered as an alternative to south-facing ramps at Dapto, however ramps at either Fowlers Road or Kanahooka Road better align with the project’s objectives.

The planning for new ramps at Dapto is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments, committing a total of $30 million.

NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Roads and Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Transport and Roads Anna Watson MP said:

“The community’s feedback has played a key role in shaping the direction of this project, and it’s great to see planning progress with two locations supported by locals.”

“Teams will now take a closer look at options at Fowlers and Kanahooka Roads and carry out design, detailed traffic modelling, environmental studies, field investigations, cost estimates and economic analysis to determine the preferred location for the ramps.

“We thank the community for its input into the project and look forward to sharing future findings as we move towards better connectivity for Dapto and surrounding suburbs.”
